    Authority, responsibility and accountability are all necessary components of a smoothly-functioning business office.       Responsibility means the duties assigned to a person at the time of delegation of authority. Responsibility also denotes the obligation of the subordinate to perform the duty to the best of his ability. It arises from the superior-subordinate relationship. Authority can be delegated, but responsibility cannot be delegated. Authority moves downward. In business, authority and responsibility need to be aligned appropriately, with the person responsible for certain outcomes having the authority to make them happen.

    Some consider responsibility and authority to be a personal matter best addressed by adaptations to existing policy, procedure and classifications. Others see the authority/responsibility issue as one of many indicators of the need to restructure the entire field of librarianship. "Responsibility" is a key word in the classroom and, as teachers, we play an important role in helping students become responsible — interpersonally, personally, at home, and in the local and global community.
